I’ve always wanted a sewing table, but have never been able to justify spending the money to buy one. I decided to build my own instead – it turned out to be a great decision! Not only do I have a place to sew now, but I also have a lot of storage space, which I didn’t have before. It was a simple project, and I’ll show you how I did it so you can build one too.

 

How to Put a New Sewing Machine in an Old Table       

If you’ve got an old table lying around that’s too small for your new machine, consider putting a new machine in it!             This works especially well if the table is small enough that it will fit through a standard doorway.  Measure the distance between the floor and the bottom of the table and subtract that from the height of the table. For example, a table that’s 30 inches tall will fit through most doorways if the bottom of the table is 18 inches off the floor.

Sewing is a great hobby, and sewing machines are even better. But, old sewing machines tend to be bulky and hard to maneuver. Luckily, there’s a simple solution. All you need is an old table of the same size as your new sewing machine, and you’re good to go! You’ve inherited an old table. How to Build a Sewing Machine Table


You can build the table with a few simple pieces of plywood and a few bolts and washers. The bolts should be long enough to go through the table at least once, but not all the way through so that the heads don’t drag on the floor. The washers should be large enough to cover the heads of the bolts so that the bolts don’t show when the table is closed. Build a new table to fit the dimensions of the space available. If you’re using a table from a store, measure the dimensions of the table to find the height that will work best. If you’re building a table from scratch, use a piece of 2x4 lumber as a starting point and add more wood as necessary. The wood should be long enough to extend at least 4 inches above the height of the table. Build a new table to fit the space available.
